In 1994, when the Mayor’s Jazz Brunch was first held, Houston’s former Mayor Bob Lanier wrote, “Houston is a culturally rich city with an international character that lends itself to the success of the Houston International Jazz Festival. I salute Council Member Judson Robinson and Jazz Education Inc.’s Bubbha Thomas for their vision and leadership for the Festival. I extend congratulations and thanks to their committee for the support of the brunch.”

This event is part of Jazz Education’s fundraising efforts, supporting its children’s music education programs, the H-E-B Summer Jazz Workshop and the Jazz & Poetry Series. In making his case for the brunch Lanier continued, “We support educational programs for youth in our city. The study of music fosters creative, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.”

Former Mayor Lee P. Brown, who hosted the brunch every year during his six years in office delighted in the announcement of the Festival and the brunch, saying, “it allows another opportunity to showcase the city and all that it has to offer.”

In 2004, Mayor Bill White kept the Mayor’s Jazz Brunch tradition going. He said the purpose of the event is a “good thing” for the City of Houston.

In 2010, the Honorable Mayor Annise Parker awarded Anderson Christopher DeWalt the Summer Jazz Workshop Scholarship.

In addition to being a major fundraiser for Jazz Education, the Brunch is also one of the most popular events for the Jazz Festival.
